3 Reasons Why Happiness Rules…and 3 Ways To Get There

by Ché Rippinger of Hip The HooplaFor more Happy Thoughts Info and Positive Inspiration visit www.HipTheHoopla.com

We all know we should be as happy as much of the time as possible, but do you know WHY?  Here’s 3 BIG convincing reasons & 3 EASY ways to get happy…

1. Happiness affects the rest of what you do.

Think productivity, energy and efficiency. If there is something you are dreading (for example paying your bills or cleaning out an overstuffed closet) think of how excited you are to do it. Think of how exciting anything else might be in comparison, and it’s easy to see where procrastination comes from. If there is something you are happy about doing like going on vacation, notice that even though it takes work and planning time, you WANT to do it, because the outcome is going to be fun.

Any given situation has a mindset that gets locked in, almost instantaneously. Something “good” has “good” thoughts that magnetize towards it. And same with a perceived “bad” situation. You can choose to change up your thoughts, in each moment, to see what all you can think of that’s good during the harder parts of life. Maybe being diagnosed with something doesn’t seem like fun, but if you think of the positive lifestyle choices that you can make to help deal with the “problem,” and know that the results will change things for the better…what a great way to change things up!

2. Happiness affects your body chemistry.

This one’s easy, especially when we look at the detriment that stress has on our bodies. Stress overtaxes our adrenal function, heart, blood circulation, digestion, brain waves and even creates wrinkles! With all that, why not get happy to have better functioning organs and body systems? Endorphins reduce stress, improve the immune system and help heal the body. Happiness is even a pain reducer. The famous case of Norman Cousins using humor to get off of the pain meds and heal the condition that his doctors diagnosed, is one of the many examples of this.

3. Happiness is contagious.

Luckily the vagus nerve* isn’t just for sharing tears and yawns when others do. When someone smiles at you, your own system is triggered, and joy can quietly erupt. When you see a giggling baby, or almost anyone engaged in a hearty laugh, it’s really hard not to smile and also start laughing. That’s a good thing. Think of how many boring company meetings get livened up when humor is used, or something really silly happens. It’s definitely more memorable and we also bond positively in the process. Positive associations are things we generally WANT to gravitate to.

So how can you get happy in more moments of your precious lifetime?

1. Laugh. Giggle. Smile.

It could be with others, reading something funny, or watching YouTube videos. Try what I call “Microwave Minutes.” For the time your food is in a microwave (or heating something on the stove, or waiting in line, etc.), just start laughing. It may be weird at first, but with practice, it will come easier and you will find more and more little opportunity moments to consciously smile and laugh. Bonus points if you try the laughter minute exercise in an elevator, with others!

2. Try Laughter Yoga.

It’s more about the breathing state and not about telling jokes. There are Laughter Yoga variations for all kinds of people, from kids to elderly; businesses to prisons. It’s a combination of the “Four Elements of Joy”: singing, dancing, playing and laughing. Exercises that encourage movement, interaction with others and joy, are prevalent in Laughter Yoga. And more breathing equals more oxygen. Oxygenation to the body’s cells is a huge healthy benefit of deep laughter (which requires big breathing from the diaphragm–easily done with big belly laughing). FYI: disease cannot live in well oxygenated cells.

3. Surround yourself with the positive.

Seek out positive stories, information, people (and unconditionally loving pets). If you have friends who are a joy to be around, you naturally want to spend more time with them (especially over constant “crisis mode” doom people). Conversely, you can BE that person others like to hang out with. More bringing up the “good” stuff in life, or seeing the positive points in any situation, will help you do this for yourself too, so you don’t always have to rely on others.

Whatever works for you to get happy, try it. Even one great session of prolonged laughter could melt away stress and reduce damaging hormones like excessive cortisol.  The other happiness upsides: it can be totally free and no fancy equipment is needed. People may just think you got plastic surgery from all that smiling, especially if a positive attitude and brighter life outlook ensues!

4 Easy Grab Bag Tips + Tricks To Hoop & Dance Happy

Dance Hoop Play Sing Create Flow Be You from Hip The HooplaWhat can help tweak your Hoop/Dance/Movement practice? Here’s a few tips and tricks to add to your mental note’s bag, plus a bonus!

by Ché Rippinger

1. Make Time. Yep-Craft your own clock. Well really carving out a bit of the schedule you currently over-cram with everything else-important and not. Sometimes a whole hour is unrealistic, and a half hour even still may be too much to fit in, too. But 5 minutes is doable for anyone. That’s just, “turn on the music, grab the hoop(s) and have at it for one song.” And for the best in your body…

2. Start very slow…warm up…jam and play…cool down. Sometimes we skip these simple steps, and then our bodies let us know how and why that’s not a good idea. Start simply with an over all wiggle, shimmy, or anything movement-wise, that is gentle getting the blood flowing to all the big body parts. Roll your head and shoulders, sway the rib cage, rock the hips, bend and flex the legs, feet, arms and hands. Start out with smaller motions and then progress to bigger ones, then dial it back down to small again. Simple-Oui?!

3. Keep an area reasonably clear for your dance/hooping/yoga/movement/meditation practice. If you have a dedicated space–or at least one that is easily convertible so you can double-duty the area…you will be more motivated to use it. If you cannot show it to others, or you have to close the door on it, then how much happy inspiration and sweetly calling your name is it doing for you?!

4. Just Dance! Sometimes we are so hyper-focused on getting whatever new trick or move, that we don’t connect them very well, or infuse our love of hooping and dance with our own personal style. It doesn’t matter what your background is…whatever– bring it to the table! Dance it out! If you are alone, who cares what you look like. And if you are with others…whatever you think is goofy, may appear fabulous and inspirational for someone else (it happens All the time!).

Ha! #5…A Bonus Tip:
5. Connect with people! Online and in-person groups, classes, and jams will join you with others experiencing similar issues, questions, and advice and is great for sharing your little progress points.

As always, go forth and hoop, dance and laugh yourself happy!

Come experience a “Grab Bag ‘O Goodies” with us! 3 Steps to Joy: The “Play Moves” of Hip The Hoopla

Come let your inner child play with an adult sized hula hoop at Hip The Hoopla classes!

Sometimes we take ourselves WAY too Seriously. Here’s 3 Quick “Play Moves” aka steps, to incorporate a more joy and lightness in your day.

1. Smile. We underestimate the powerful chain effect of this. When someone shares a genuine smile with you, it is an understated, but highly communicative gesture of good will. Your endorphins go up when you observe the smiles of others. And less facial muscles are needed to smile than to frown, so it should be easier your daily facial workout!

2. Laugh. It’s one of the fastest, best and most positive ways to quickly and fully oxygenate your body’s cells. A great belly laugh is an excellent strategy for deep breathing. They say “Laughter is the best medicine.” Norman Cousins proved it by healing himself after a weighty health diagnosis by watching comedies. That all important and essential laughter, triggers an endorphin rush of happy body chemistry which helps cells heal. Laughter is also contagious! Need proof? Watch giggling baby videos on YouTube! The Vegas Nerve is a reactionary response in our body. You see others laugh, and it triggers your laughter, too. The Vegas nerve is also responsive to crying and some say yawning, as well.

3. Play. You know how kids are encouraged to “go play” because it’s good exercise? Well adults need it too. Our “grown-up” play is just more highly marketed so you spend money to do it! Las Vegas, vacations and buying expensive mechanical toys are all part of the ploy. But it can be as simple as playing tag football in the park, or grabbing a “hula” hoop and having at it with reckless childlike abandon. Have you ever noticed, there’s very little “I will look stupid doing this,” aka “adult ego” action going on, when a kid picks up a hoop? They just do it and don’t care about looking silly. We could take a page from their book.

If we add even five little minutes a day of these to our own daily habits, we could enjoy our own “responsible” lives with a exponential increase in fun, enjoyment, and enthusiasm. Just imagine: how much better could we feel on the inside and out?!

Thank you for taking the time to read this and improve your day. Please share this with others!

~Ché Rippinger is a certified Laughter Yoga leader and teaches play regularly with her Hip The Hoopla humorous hoop dance fitness classes. It’s easier to do than you think when you get in one of these highly encouraging, fun, laughter-filled classes. Why not give it a try? Find out more for yourself:
