4 Elements to Boost Your Hoop Dance Creativity
How can you inspire creativity to your hula hoop dance flow?
By borrowing an idea from Mother Nature, you can incorporate the four elements of Earth, Air, Wind, and Fire to boost your hoop dance creativity. Inject some #hoopspiration into your hoop dance practice. So get out of your boredom rut. Surpass your static plateau. What movement essences of these elements can you inject into your happy hooping to get you overflowing with ideas to try?
EARTH
Earth has the feeling of being grounded. It’s sturdy, solid, and foundational.
For Elemental EARTH Hooping Try:
• Actually connecting your hoop to the ground.
• Or connecting various parts of your body on the ground.
• Perhaps try foot hooping while lying down.
AIR
Air is the element of lightness and breezy movement. Unless you’re taking on twisting tornado energy!
For Elemental AIR Hooping Try:
• Hoop tosses.
• Moving your hoop through space and tracing it’s movement with your other hand.
WATER
Water flows, ripples and waves. Water can have gentle swish and grace.
For Elemental WATER Hooping Try:
•”Walk The Dog” hoop trick and variations.
• Linear Isolations.
• Cat-Eyes.
• Escalators.
FIRE
Fire heats, seduces, and burns.
For Elemental FIRE Hooping Try:
• Experiment with Anti-Spin Flowers.
• Wack yourself with some Wedgies.
These are just some of the interpretations of these elements.
How you interpret these elements can be completely unique to your experience and perspective. Try meditating, journaling, or mind-mapping on the ideas of what each element means to you.
And if you are an aficionado of Feng Shui, you can change things up using their ancient 5 elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. These elements can flow in a constructive or destructive cycle, depending on how you use it. The Feng Shui elements also have corresponding colors,”cures” or remedies, areas of the body, and emotions associated with them. So you see, you can really go down the rabbit hole of creativity, pretty fast!
Bring a buddy, so you can find your way back. ♥

Hoop BOTH Ways!
QUESTION: Should you just hoop in one direction?
ANSWER: Hoop BOTH Ways!
Here’s why you should expand your hoop dance to utilize Both Directions (hooping to the right AND hooping to the left).
Hoop Both Ways…It Has It’s Benefits!
- Work your Body.
If you lifted weights, you probably wouldn’t just do right arm bicep curls. You’d work both sides equally, for strength and balance. When you practice utilizing both sides, you train your body to develop stronger muscle memory. - Work your Brain.
The right side of your brain controls the left side of your body, and vice versa. Also, when you challenge your brain with new learning, you create new neural pathways. - Variety and Expansion.
If you are able to get into a variety of moves from both directions, you will exceptionally expand what’s possible in your hooping practice. - Extra Ah-Ha Moments!
You may get something on your non-dominant side that you were previously struggling with when you were hooping in your comfort zone, aka “favorite side.”
Hooping in your “favorite” or “dominant” side is often referred to as your “current.” I like to hoop in both currents. I also highly encourage my students to regularly hoop in both directions. It increases what’s easily possible and accessible. If you can only get into a move or transition from one direction, then you limit your flow dance options to only what feels comfortable and accessible from your favorite direction. By working both directions while hooping, your creativity can become exponential!
How to get that “other side” when it doesn’t feel as natural?
Often we refer to our opposite current as our “bad side.” Those words actually makes me cringe, because that side did nothing wrong to deserve that ill-fated moniker, other than it doesn’t get much practice time. Also when you keep speaking those words, you can come to believe it as truth. And it’s just not fair to put something down about yourself.
So I call my so-called non-dominant side, “My Side That Needs a Little Extra Love.” So give that side more rotations, so that it does feel more comfortable. Muscle memory takes time and repetition. Practice is the key. It may not feel great while you’re first trying it, but as you practice, it will start to feel more natural, and eventually even second nature!
Warm, Cozy, and Stuck
Lastly, know that your current/dominant side can become a warm and cozy comfort zone. Sometimes of not trying new things. It can also become a rut where you get stuck. Often we develop an unconscious habit of how to do something. If you are stuck getting a new move, switch up the direction, or side, that you are trying it on. When you engage in this “beginner mind” methodology, you are way more open to discovering and trying a new technique, than the habitual patterned brain is.
Enjoy hooping in both directions. May your fun incorporating both sides, build your hoop dance tool box of possibilities.

Happy International Women’s Day
Happy International Women’s Day!
And Happy Women’s History Month!
...We’ve Come A Long Way Baby, and we still have a lot to go!
Let’s celebrate the many accomplishments of women who’ve gone before all of us. They’ve helped pave the way for us to stand here today, doing whatever we choose to do. Although we still have a long way to go in many ways, the freedoms and opportunities we get to take advantage of these days, are vast.
For Me…
I remember back in my professional cartooning days when I had to bill myself as a “female cartoonist,” because I was among the second very small wave of female novelties in a traditionally white older male-dominated field.
I also remember being the only female “grip” (lighting tech) on predominately male television and film crews, back when I did that.
Luckily, I had an easier time being accepted as a female newspaper columnist (especially thanks to the popularity of writer Candace Bushnell of “Sex And The City” fame.
And in my current career path since 2011 as a professional hoop dancer, instructor, hoopsmith and happy healthy wellness coach…well, lots of estrogen there!
Funny how…
In both the hoop dance and belly dance fields, we go out of our way to help inform and promote the fact that there are many talented males, as well as females. It’s a lot of work to break down stereotypes!
In our future…
Hopefully there will come a day when categories can be not only equally represented, AND compensated, but also, normally mixed. Race car drivers, actors, scientists, mathematicians, mechanics, directors, business leaders, politicians, billionaires, etc.
Until then, be thankful of where we’ve gotten to, and let’s keep working for more. May we continue to expand and explore more ways of getting along more fairly our world.
Blessings on your own personal mission to accomplish all you can 💫🌟💫

How To Get The Most Out of Workshops and Events
Going to a great workshop, conference, or learning event?
Here’s 8 of my favorite ways to get the most out of the conference/event/workshops you’ve invested your valuable time, money and energy into.
1.) Take a notebook…take actual notes and make some stick figure illustrations to help you with positioning, movement, direction, things that make sense to you, etc.
2.) Take video of the summaries, if you can. Make sure you do NOT post these anywhere, as that’s the instructor’s livelihood.
3.) If you can, get video of Yourself doing/demonstrating the moves, or even explaining it, that’s really helpful! Part of the reason is that your brain will be spinning with all the new info you will learn in those many learning moments.
Plus, the videos will help you remember that you actually DID get these moves (at least once in the workshops!), and are possible again, with patience, and lots of practice.
4.) Review your favorite parts you want to remember right away…it’ll help you retain the information.
5.) If you can, teach your new information to someone else, that will also help solidify the info even deeper so it stays in your mental toolbox. Make sure you credit your source, and just share some key key points, or cool moves, not the whole workshop, so people are interested in studying with that instructor when they can.
6.) Another note that I’ve kept true to for many, many years…Pick “one golden nugget,” just for you, from each thing you go to. That will serve you well over time, and help you feel better when you can’t remember it all (but paid to be there and participated!).
7.) Meet others, and get their contact info!* You may end up having them as a friend for years to come, as a colleague to share notes and review with, and to expand your community connection. So many wins!
8.) BONUS TIP: Always have fun. You’ll be happy to remember something you really enjoyed.
If you put these 8 tips into play, you will retain new information Sooooo much better, gain fabulous friends, and really get the most value that you can possibly can from all of your experiences!

Small Consistent Steps to Healthy-Green Drink Hacks
How Can You Get Healthy? Small…Consistent…Steps.
Many of us stop and start so much when trying to get to our finish line. Using this “Dotted Line” path toward your goals, is one way to accomplish your goals and one that many of us default to because of life.
However, making incremental progress, consistently, is really helpful for actually reaching your goal rather than blasting out progress (starting) then stopping, then starting again and repeating that time consuming energetic time cycle. Just Keep Going.
Green Drink Tips and Hacks
Here’s an example that I’ve been putting into practice more recently. I’d ideally like to have a fresh green juice every day…but I have a shortcut go-to, so I can accomplish this a bit easier. I want to stay on my health goal path to keep my immune system at a more optimal level, and help counterbalance my sugar intake, when I’m not quite sticking to my sweet reduction goal. However, I don’t have the time every day to pull out the juicer, juice, and clean up.
1.) My Really FAST Green Shot Hack:
I figured out for me what works in a pinch. I have some greens powder that I can spoon into a glass jar, add a few ounces of water, juice, or coconut almond milk (one of my new favorite dairy alternatives) and make a really fast “Green Shot.” It goes down in 1-3 gulps. Is it live enzymatic juice? No. But it sure beats many other options I could easily falter to, and I’m making a consistent step towards my “more greens” goal.
I talk about this fun hack in this episode of my Hoop Love Ya’ll Show:
2.) Next Best Blending Green Drink Hack:
If I have a little more time, I have a bunch of frozen fruits and vegetables that I can throw in my NutriBullet blender with some water, juice, yogurt, or almond/coconut milk and make a smoothie. One of my tricks to not wasting food is to get fruits and veggies cut up and into the freezer just before they head south. This works GREAT for taking advantage of on sale or discount produce–especially if it’s organic! The best part of this is that you get your juice AND the Fiber, too–which most people don’t get enough of in their food intake. That fiber helps with metabolism, is a scrub brush for your intestines, and helps give you a nice sustained, nutritious energy. Yes, please to that!
Super Immune Boost/Inflammation Reducer Hack:
FYI–Ginger is Fabulous in the freezer–I can cut it with my kitchen scissors and it lasts so much longer without shriveling up before I get to use it.
3.) Best Green Drink Option-Press or Juice:
If I have the time, and produce in the fridge, I will get out the juice press (we have an Omega which I love). It’s slower but really presses out the juice so darn well. I can also bring out the big juicer (we have a Breville) and go to town. I like to make up a bunch and store it in glass bottles for the fridge. You could freeze it…if you put it in plastic bottles (now I’ve gotta go try this). Leave a bit of space for expansion, if freezing.
Juicing is even more time consuming for me because I have gone to the veggie side and really load my drinks up with lots of vegetables and very little fruit. My husband, on the other hand–he prefers a highly drinkable juice, which for him includes much more sweetness and fruit with a hint of veggies. So that takes a while. But I love him and want to make sure he drinks it if I’m making the effort to juice it.
4.) Delegate Your Green Drinks Hack:
Of course if schedule and effort are issues, you can swing by a juice bar where they can make it up fresh for you–and to your liking. It can be pricey, but your time is definitely worth it. Plus you can save money in the long run with your improved health care costs (and perhaps no medications).
5.) Buy Your Green Drink Pre-Made Hack:
In a pinch, the pre-bottled juices at your local grocery store will do, too–although most load them up with extra sugary fruits like apple, pear and grape to make them more palatable for the general public. When you drink sweet juices, you are missing the fiber which helps properly regulate the insulin in your body. So basically you are getting a sugar rush…just a little healthier than a candy bar. Make sure to read and research your labels–there’s lots of sneaky ingredients out there you should be aware of before consuming.
No matter what you do, do something–anything–that you know will lead you in a positive direction to your goals. One thing matters. Especially if it’s followed up by another one thing, and another one thing, consistently.
“Just Keep Going.” That gets me to my goal, which is a daily effort and work in progress. Or as Dory from Finding Nemo would say, “Just keep swimming!” (Thanks to Ellen DeGeneres, the voice of Dory.)

Drop Your Hoop…It’s Good For You!
Ever DROP your hoop?
Feel bad about it? Don’t. So Drop your hoop…It’s Good For You!
Here’s why…
I have a joke I often tell people that relates to hooping: Notice that they call it “yoga practice.” It is NOT called “yoga perfection.”
It’s in the trying that we learn the most. Especially cool new moves that come from saving the hoop (a.k.a. recoveries). So revel in dropping your hoop…because as I also often say, “If you aren’t dropping your hoop, you aren’t trying anything NEW!”♥
*Here’s an example of one of many performances over the years I’ve been hooping, where I dropped my hoop. Mortifying on stage during the moment…but how you recover is everything–whether people feel bad for you or are happy that you handled it well. I happen to love this video because I was performing in front of my hooping peers and was trying so many new moves that I had just learned at that Spin Summit.
Plus I really got into the campiness and fun of doing the dance–and that was what really mattered…not that I dropped my hoop and miraculously I was able to get it handed back quickly and continue with two hoops (with a little help!).
Keep practicing. Keep dropping your hula hoop, and trying again. Keep smiling!
