10 Fire Hooping Safety Tips & Tricks

Hip The Hoopla Fire Hooping Safety Tips by Che Rippinger

Hip The Hoopla Fire Hooping Safety Tips by Che Rippinger
Fire Hooping Safety for Smart People

So you want to set your hula hoop on fire and dance? Here’s some tips that will help you do that safely so you–and others–can enjoy the experience. Bonus short video demo at end!

1. ALWAYS have at least one Fire Safety.

A “Fire Safety” is a person who is watching you carefully and has proper training to calmly help alert and assist you in any situation and avert potential danger. Your fire safety should have a duvatene towel, cotton towel or wet large natural cloth to put out your fire props, you, or any area that starts on fire (if your prop hits the grass outside–try stepping on it immediately to put it out).

2. Get trained with experienced fire spinners who know what they are doing.

Their advice and experience can safe you a huge learning curve and keep you happy and healthy, too!  They can also school you on different props, including pros and cons of different styles and companies. Do your own research too! The more you educate yourself in props, techniques and safety, the more well-prepared you will be for your “Virgin Burn” (first time fire spinning). **Get your fire props from a reputable source. They are NOT toys. Spend the money and get something good–or borrow from someone to try theirs out (with their permission and supervision).

3. Do not mix any mind-altering substances with fire.

Your judgement, timing and perception can turn something fun into something very bad-very quickly (including alcohol, legal or illegal drugs or even out of control emotional state–if you know you shouldn’t get behind the wheel of a car, then the same applies to working with fuel & flame).

4. Wear proper clothing.

Make sure your clothing is made of natural materials which have a lower burn rate (no synthetics–those can easily flame up AND melt TO your SKIN–bad burns & emergency room visits!) Also you want form fitting movable clothing (not super tight and nothing loose and flapping–like ribbons or dragging pant legs).

5. Keep your fueling area safe and away from anything that can ignite it.

It should be separate from the area you “burn”, “light up” or fire dance in. This means NO cigarettes, small children, drunk/stupid people, etc. Definitely start fire spinning OUTDOORS in an open, safe, clear area. Do NOT spin fire inside, unless you have experience AND FIRE INSURANCE. You can spin on private property without insurance. You need proper insurance and a permit to spin in public places. Many spin without, but you take on a lot of safety and financial risk to do that. Anyone who is a professional or performs/takes in money, should have these.

6. Use the proper fuel.

Just because you have a fuel–that burns, doesn’t mean it is a good idea to use it with your fire props. Some can have more toxic fumes, and other consequences that are not safe or pleasant. Most of the people I know, including myself prefer Coleman’s White Camping fuel. You can get it, reasonably priced, wherever you can get camping equipment or surplus supplies (like a military store).

7. Start small and try out a fire hoop (or fire prop) WITHOUT being lit up.

There is a different weight to get used to along with some different movements that you will find better to attempt before you try everything you know in hooping/flow spinning.

8. Protect your head and hands.

Some people wet their hair. Some wear a hat or scarf and tuck their hair up and in. I learned my lesson when my fire safety said, “Your hair is on fire,” during a parade. The tail end of my long braid caught and I got it out quickly before damage was done. Since then–I’m all for not having the nasty scent of burning hair. Also, do NOT use hairspray–unless you want to pull a “Buffy The Vampire” trick and ignite very easily! As for your hands, I like leather gloves. There are other gloves, sleeves and gauntlets you can use that are natural materials that are helpful or safe choices.

9. When you play with fire, you CAN get burned…it’s FIRE, after all!

Most of us fire spinners have an injury, burn or experience to tell you about where not everything went right. It happens. Fire is a risk. We do the best we can to minimize it with knowledge, practice, safety and experience. Make sure you check your fire props BEFORE you fuel up and light up-check that all is secure and in good condition/working order. Bad connections can come loose and start fires.

Also, make sure you squeeze out excess fuel (use rubber gloves) from your wicks, and/or “spin off” in a safe area (away from others) so that you do not fling flaming fuel at anyone or anything, once you are lit up.

10. Keep a first aid kit easily accessible.

Burn cream, clean dry bandages, Water, and cell phone. Prevention will help way more than not planning ahead to be safe. A bonus trick someone passed along to me was some essential oil (especially lavender oil), to help heal and is pleasant smelling for burned nose hairs! Really happy I know that one now!

Bonus: By being safe, you will have more fun!

Also know that…

*FYI: Fire is loud.

* Fire is awe-inspiring.

* Fire gets your adrenaline pumping.

Performers Bonus…Here’s an important fire tip for your fire spinning tricks:

Try to do faster moves in the beginning when your wicks are more fueled (waist, leg, chest hooping), and slower ones (isolations, floats, poses, etc) when your fuel is burning out and your flame is low. Fast moves will put out your fire out faster–slower moves will extend the life of your “burn”.

Thank you for joining us for this video series. I am Che’ Rippinger of Hip The Hoopla and this is a 7 day challenge of humorous hoop dance to learn, or to improve, your hula hoop skills with this 7 part focus on dance–from head to toe.
♥All levels welcome to join in! Let’s DO this!♦

Also, please join us online for classes that will work these moves in more time and depth. Also you can get a complimentary hoop consultation with any of our professional hand-crafted custom hula hoops. Contact us to schedule now.

ARM DANCE & HOOPING TIPS:

Use “Ballet/Belly dance arms” for strength conditioning and pretty flow with your hoop dancing–head lifted high, neck long, shoulders pressed Down (they’ll want to float up), elbows a little lower than shoulders, wrists a little lower than elbows…and hands a touch lower than wrists-. Make sure to have the arms reaching long and extending into a large curve (like holding a body-sized beach ball).
“Poi Arm Airplane” has the arms flowing with arms straight out and equidistant to each other the whole time throughout your movement. Try twisting the body to get the arms moving as if you are sandwiched in between two walls. FYI–your planes that you are flowing in are going to change from wheel to wall plane as you twist your body.
“Snake Arms” are really luscious to do~remember elbow leads up (slightly, like a few inches), and elbow leads down.

FORESHADOWING NOTE: We are working on hands for DAY 6 of this Hoop Dance Challenge.

HOOP DANCE TIPS:

Please warm up and cool down (head to toe!) to keep your body safe and hooping longer, hydrate, and take it sloooow! Make sure you have a nice dance posture: stand tall, shoulders back, chest and head lifted, abdominal wall in, pelvis tucked under and a slight bend in the knees. Dancer/Boxer feet–keep your weight shifted forward on the balls of your feet rather than resting back on your heels–easier for nimble movement. Try everything *without* the hoop first. Next, just hold the hoop and do the moves. Then get your fancier hoop moves in while coordinating with some basic stepping or fancy footwork dance combinations. Bring all you have to the table–your personal style, experience and sass! Stay positive and give yourself lots of credit for any and all progress! Keep a hoop notebook and take a couple of moments to write down tips and tricks that are helpful for you. Then review them right then and there, and a few minutes the next day…etc. You’ll be amazed at your progress! Please post how you are doing. Grab a buddy and stay accountable to another. 7 Day Hoop Dance Challenge-Day 4 Chest & Core

CHEST and CORE HOOPING TIPS:

Core hooping uses a lot of muscles and is a great internal organ massage. There are two methodologies for getting chest hooping. Warming up with and using a chest isolation* (horizontal rotation) will improve your body movement skills greatly as well as coordination (*Make sure you bend the knees and use hands on hips to give you a good press into the stretch movement and more range of motion). A side to side push movement may prove easier–both are valid ways to get there.  I find that most people learn “chest hooping” easier with the arms out and up above the head. This lets you concentrate on just the chest hooping movement first. The “Hot Stove” technique is a fun way to get your hand(s) and arm(s) into the hoop, to get “shoulder hooping.” Getting that alternating shoulder shrug action going will help maintain chest hooping and also help keep the hoop up (your hula hoop will “ladder” itself back up with that motion if/when it starts going down). Core hooping uses a big muscle group, so try not to hoop to exhaustion or for really long time periods (break it up with other moves), so you can live to hoop another day!

HIP & BOOTIE HOOPING TIPS:

Keep your knees slightly bent so you have more room for the hips to move, rotate, shimmy, etc. Keep smiling–you are working your tushie–so have some fun with it and cut loose with your hips. There are lots of ways to do these moves, whether you have belly dance experience or not. The variations on these are endless–especially when you combine your body movements with hoop tricks. Remember this is about bringing DANCE (with fun and your unique personality) into your hooping–not just tricks. A hip scarf is fun for practice with coins or fringe–hearing jingling or seeing that flowy movement. Sometimes it can hinder your on-body hooping a bit though unless you have some inner hoop grip tape lining or turn in the direction your hoop is spinning to give yourself more time to move with a slower hoop rotation.

Some Fun Bootie Synonyms:

Rump, badunkadunk, bum, rear, heinie, butt, rear end, (the A part of T & A), keister, junk in the trunk, tail end, and caboose. And I call it a “bootie shelf,” lol so shake it if you’ve got it!

LEG HOOPING TIPS:

I do distinguish between “leg hooping” and “knee hooping,” which some people use interchangeably. I recommend NOT hooping directly on the knees, but instead slightly above or below to keep your joints and tendons safe, especially if you are using a bigger or heavier hula hoop. You can hoop on the legs horizontally, vertically and we haven’t even covered floor hooping using the legs here…but check out this video for some really helpful tips on leg hooping floor work:

7 Day Hoop Dance Challenge-Day 1 Footwork

Ready to get your fancy dance pants on in this great 7 Day Hoop Dance Challenge? Whether you’re just starting or a super pro, there’s always something new to learn from others. So game on– grab your hula hoop and let’s get hooping!

Day 1- Focus on Footwork

Getting those feet moving: You can step in place, try some small movements or get whole foot combinations added to your hoop dance.
Want more training or personal help? Get your tootsies in a group class online or in person…or schedule some private coaching time. Value packages are available for those awesome folks who are wanting to accomplish more and commit.
Let’s Hoop This!

HOOPING TIPS:

And Please Share! Thanks So Much for watching! Subscribe to this channel here and our informative hoop circle news via e-mail at www.HipTheHoopla.com
