3 Reasons Why Happiness Rules…and 3 Ways To Get There

by Ché Rippinger of Hip The HooplaFor more Happy Thoughts Info and Positive Inspiration visit www.HipTheHoopla.com

We all know we should be as happy as much of the time as possible, but do you know WHY?  Here’s 3 BIG convincing reasons & 3 EASY ways to get happy…

1. Happiness affects the rest of what you do.

Think productivity, energy and efficiency. If there is something you are dreading (for example paying your bills or cleaning out an overstuffed closet) think of how excited you are to do it. Think of how exciting anything else might be in comparison, and it’s easy to see where procrastination comes from. If there is something you are happy about doing like going on vacation, notice that even though it takes work and planning time, you WANT to do it, because the outcome is going to be fun.

Any given situation has a mindset that gets locked in, almost instantaneously. Something “good” has “good” thoughts that magnetize towards it. And same with a perceived “bad” situation. You can choose to change up your thoughts, in each moment, to see what all you can think of that’s good during the harder parts of life. Maybe being diagnosed with something doesn’t seem like fun, but if you think of the positive lifestyle choices that you can make to help deal with the “problem,” and know that the results will change things for the better…what a great way to change things up!

2. Happiness affects your body chemistry.

This one’s easy, especially when we look at the detriment that stress has on our bodies. Stress overtaxes our adrenal function, heart, blood circulation, digestion, brain waves and even creates wrinkles! With all that, why not get happy to have better functioning organs and body systems? Endorphins reduce stress, improve the immune system and help heal the body. Happiness is even a pain reducer. The famous case of Norman Cousins using humor to get off of the pain meds and heal the condition that his doctors diagnosed, is one of the many examples of this.

3. Happiness is contagious.

Luckily the vagus nerve* isn’t just for sharing tears and yawns when others do. When someone smiles at you, your own system is triggered, and joy can quietly erupt. When you see a giggling baby, or almost anyone engaged in a hearty laugh, it’s really hard not to smile and also start laughing. That’s a good thing. Think of how many boring company meetings get livened up when humor is used, or something really silly happens. It’s definitely more memorable and we also bond positively in the process. Positive associations are things we generally WANT to gravitate to.

So how can you get happy in more moments of your precious lifetime?

1. Laugh. Giggle. Smile.

It could be with others, reading something funny, or watching YouTube videos. Try what I call “Microwave Minutes.” For the time your food is in a microwave (or heating something on the stove, or waiting in line, etc.), just start laughing. It may be weird at first, but with practice, it will come easier and you will find more and more little opportunity moments to consciously smile and laugh. Bonus points if you try the laughter minute exercise in an elevator, with others!

2. Try Laughter Yoga.

It’s more about the breathing state and not about telling jokes. There are Laughter Yoga variations for all kinds of people, from kids to elderly; businesses to prisons. It’s a combination of the “Four Elements of Joy”: singing, dancing, playing and laughing. Exercises that encourage movement, interaction with others and joy, are prevalent in Laughter Yoga. And more breathing equals more oxygen. Oxygenation to the body’s cells is a huge healthy benefit of deep laughter (which requires big breathing from the diaphragm–easily done with big belly laughing). FYI: disease cannot live in well oxygenated cells.

3. Surround yourself with the positive.

Seek out positive stories, information, people (and unconditionally loving pets). If you have friends who are a joy to be around, you naturally want to spend more time with them (especially over constant “crisis mode” doom people). Conversely, you can BE that person others like to hang out with. More bringing up the “good” stuff in life, or seeing the positive points in any situation, will help you do this for yourself too, so you don’t always have to rely on others.

Whatever works for you to get happy, try it. Even one great session of prolonged laughter could melt away stress and reduce damaging hormones like excessive cortisol.  The other happiness upsides: it can be totally free and no fancy equipment is needed. People may just think you got plastic surgery from all that smiling, especially if a positive attitude and brighter life outlook ensues!

“O” Wow Tricks That Can Inspire Your Performance

Che Rippinger of Hip The Hoopla at O Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegasby Ché Rippinger of Hip The Hoopla

Having just seen the “O” show in Las Vegas at The Bellagio, I can tell you that I was in awe, inspired, and yep… just a little proud of myself to do what I do and am able to share with others from what I learn from others, and also figure out for myself.

Mini Review of “O”
The cast was Huge: Acrobats, swimmers, divers, gymnasts, actors, fire performers, Lyra aerial hoop artists, trapeze artists, contortionists, dancers, clowns, musicians, etc.

The set was mind-boggling: Water, fountains, fire, ever-changing stage, aerial, floating gymnastic pirate ship, a suspended moving frame, hoops, ladders, swinging dive boards…and more.

AND: So many people made this a dynamic, interactive, thoughtful, colorful, mesmerizing, nail-biting and yes, epic, performance. Thumbs WAY up! Go see it if there is any way you can. It has a home at The Bellagio, as the staging is rather complicated, to say the least. And it’s not exactly easily portable.

Here is the official video trailer of the “O” show:
http://youtu.be/Vm11jzx7Ka0

On that inspirational note,
Here are some tricks of the trade to improve your next performance:

What Makes a Great Performance like anything Cirque du Soleil does come together? …A lot of what I constantly teach and promote in Hip The Hoopla classes.

1. Practice. You have to be at the top of your game, or at least prepare to be your own personal best. Although we want to instantly be brilliant at something, it takes a lot of time not being that, to get there. Be willing to put in the time and effort towards perfection. Even if you fall short of that ideal, you will have advanced and improved greatly!

2. Polish. That last 1-5% can make all the difference in the world with how things look in the final production of whatever you are doing. For dance your clean and long body lines, great expression, costumes that move well without fuss, and performing bigger to your best ability all drive the overall image and what others experience as a result. Put it all out there and leave nothing behind. As they say, “Go big, or go Home.”

3. Persistence. So you don’t get something on your first try. Or your 100th. Keep going. You may be 2 tries short of getting it, so don’t give up. How many Edison light bulbs didn’t work until one variation finally did? It’s more than you might think.

And lastly, enjoy yourself! If you make whatever you are doing look enjoyable, than others will believe it to be true. If this is genuine within yourself, all the hard work to make things look easy and effortless, will completely be worth all of your time and dedication. Your heart will always show in what you do, if you let it.

7 Choreography Tips + 3 No-Nos and 6 Do-Dos

Che of Hip The Hoopla recommends tips on hoop and dance Choreography by Che’ Rippinger

Ever notice that not all performances can be a “Wing-It” type situation-especially non-solos? Sometimes you need to plan a performance with choreography. Here’s 7 cool tips and tricks to make that magic happen…plus 3 No-Nos and 6 Do-Dos.

1. Use what you’ve done
Perhaps you’ve (yes you should!) videotaped yourself and found some cool movement sequences from your dance and hoop flow. Watch, notate and capture those bits and pieces and add them in when creating a choreographed piece.

2. Utilize space
Usually the space you are performing on is more than the spot that you are standing on. Move around forward, back and side to side. And don’t get in a rectangular rut. Just because your stage may be shaped that way doesn’t mean you can’t come up with other geometric movements across it. Yes, math is involved in choreography…if nothing else, than for counting.

3. Change Levels
Operating on one level can become stagnate, no matter how many cool tricks you know. Vary it up. Go up on your toes, plié (knee bend) down, try movements to and from your knees (and protect your joints accordingly, too!). Don’t forget about the space above you-you can use it! And floor work can add a new dimension, too.  Do scope out your venue for this, first though. If everyone is sitting at the same level, only your front few rows will see what the heck you are doing down low. A friend of mine jumped off the short sage and was dancing on the audience level. She was eager to know how she did. I know she shimmied and danced very well below shoulder level, but all I could see was her cute mini-top hat!

4. Repeat Sections with Variations
Although repeating a choreography set over and over is not only boring, but downright lazy…there is a way to get away with this. Vary the sections with new elements. Change directions of the movement (side to side goes front to back, or right goes to left). Reverse the movement. If you did it going forward, try going backwards. Also if you think of the variety of planes, you can move things ALL over the place!

5. Transitions
You can have all the coolest moves, but if your hoop dance is trick to trick to trick (or dance movement to movement), even cool stuff isn’t interesting to watch. There’s an old saying: it’s the silence between the notes that makes the music…same is true of dance. Transitions can make the change from one movement to another surprising, flowing, humorous, or really build up the anticipation for your next “wow” move!

6. Strength in Numbers
It’s not always about the solo. With more people comes more possibilities of things to do. Patterns are really fun here. Everyone can go with the grain, opposite of one another, follow each other in a sequence.

7. Get Inspiration Without Copying
There are thousands of YouTube videos, movies and sources of motivational sparks for material and inspiration. Just make sure that you put your own spin on things with your unique style. There’s a fine line between “homage” and “plagerism.” Honor that without crossing it.

The No-Nos:

Don’t mouth the words or the counts! It looks amateurish and like you don’t know what you are doing. Even if you don’t think you know what you are doing, act like you do!

Don’t get the deer in the headlights look if you mess up! Smiling is one of the best defenses here. People know that this is live, and if they are expecting perfection, invite them up to join you. Seriously, brush off the hecklers. You are usually your own worst critic, and should really be your own best cheerleader instead.

Don’t try out your costume onstage without a practice run! There are mounds of horror stories on this–and some are quite dangerous.

The Do-Dos:
1. ) Practice.
2.) Write things down (so you remember it).
3.) Video your work.
4.) Plan and Prep.
5.) Get a second opinion (a practice audience).
6.)  And then practice some more.
